Project cargo and „high & heavy“ goods account for a significant share of rolling cargo handling. But the capacities of the carriers are at their limits. With short transit times and reliable schedules, car and Ro/Ro carriers have always been a popular alternative for project shipments. But since last year, the capacities of the car carriers have become increasingly limited.

According to media reports (including Hansa‘s special issue on BREAKBULK EUROPE 2023), departures from Northwest Europe by the car carriers are fully booked eight to twelve weeks in advance – and this with an 11% growth forecast of high & heavy and heavy-lift cargo volumes this year alone.

The frequency of departures from Bremerhaven or Antwerp is currently around 40 days. By doubling the tonnage and purchasing two new vessels, Bahri says the frequency should improve to less than 30 days by 2024.
